Investigator Use
Newspaper Map (newspapermap.com) is a geographic newspaper discovery tool that displays the locations of newspapers worldwide on an interactive map, allowing investigators to identify local news sources for any geographic area. Clicking on any map marker opens links to the newspaper's website, enabling direct access to locally-specific journalism in any language.
For OSINT investigators, Newspaper Map addresses a fundamental challenge in geographic research: identifying which local news publications cover a specific area, particularly in international investigations where the relevant local news ecosystem may be unfamiliar. A global investigation may require finding local newspapers in rural areas of Eastern Europe, Latin America, or Southeast Asia — regions where major international news outlets rarely provide granular local coverage.
Local news coverage provides intelligence that national and international sources consistently miss: community incidents, local court proceedings, business openings and closures, property transactions, zoning disputes, local government decisions, and coverage of individuals who are locally notable but nationally unknown. For OSINT investigations targeting specific locations or local events, these local sources are often the only journalistic record.
Newspaper Map supports language translation integration — clicking through to a foreign-language newspaper and using browser translation tools makes even non-English sources accessible to investigators. This dramatically expands the geographic range of practical newspaper research.
For due diligence investigations involving businesses or individuals in specific regions, searching for local newspaper coverage reveals reporting on controversies, legal issues, business activities, and personal conduct that would not appear in national databases.
Historical local newspaper research (via archive links where available) can surface decades-old reporting on subjects that may be relevant to establishing historical patterns of behavior or verifying background claims.
Limitations: Newspaper Map's coverage is uneven — major metropolitan areas have many mapped papers while rural areas in developing countries may have few or no entries. Not all newspapers maintain accessible digital archives. Translation quality for non-major languages can be imperfect.
Document the location searched, newspapers identified, and any relevant articles found with publication names, dates, and URLs in case notes.
