Investigator Use
Live Train Tracker (tracker.geops.ch) is an open-source, real-time rail traffic visualization tool that displays current train positions across European rail networks on an interactive map. It visualizes trains as moving points on the actual rail network, showing current position, speed, and route.
For OSINT investigators, real-time rail tracking provides transportation intelligence for investigations involving European rail travel. When a subject is known to be traveling by rail in a European country covered by the tracker, their approximate position can be monitored in real time based on the train service's position.
Rail travel investigation complements flight tracking for subjects who use rail as a primary mode of transport. In Europe, where high-speed rail is a preferred travel mode for many routes, rail tracking provides equivalent location intelligence to flight tracking for shorter distances.
The visualization of real-time train positions allows investigators to verify whether specific trains are running on schedule, have experienced delays, or have followed expected routes — information relevant when rail travel is part of an investigation timeline.
For infrastructure analysis, the rail map visualization shows the complete rail network topology for covered countries, revealing station locations, line connections, and routing options relevant to investigation planning.
Incident reconstruction for events that occurred on or near rail lines can use track positioning data to establish the proximity of specific trains to specific locations at relevant times.
Coverage is primarily European, with particularly comprehensive coverage of Switzerland, Germany, Austria, France, and neighboring countries. Coverage depth varies by country and relies on real-time data feeds from rail operators.
Limitations: Live tracking data is real-time only — historical position data for past train movements is not available through this tool. The tool shows public train service data, not passenger manifests or booking information.
Document any relevant train services tracked with routes, timing, and observation timestamps.
