Investigator Use

FlightAware is the world's largest flight tracking platform, providing real-time and historical data on commercial and private aircraft flights worldwide. It tracks aircraft by tail number, flight number, route, and operator, providing departure, arrival, altitude, speed, and track data for millions of daily flights.

For OSINT investigators, aircraft tracking is a powerful intelligence source for investigating travel patterns, establishing presence in specific locations, and monitoring the movements of subjects, organizations, and assets.

Private aircraft tracking is a particularly significant OSINT capability. While commercial airline passenger manifests are not publicly accessible, private aircraft movements (tracked by their N-number or registration) are publicly visible through FlightAware. Investigators can search by aircraft tail number to retrieve the complete flight history — all routes flown, departure and arrival airports, dates, and times — creating a verifiable record of where the aircraft has traveled.

Executive and corporate jet tracking through FlightAware supports due diligence investigations into corporate travel, sanctions compliance (tracking aircraft owned by sanctioned individuals), and investigative journalism into how private jets are used by public figures.

For establishing presence in specific locations, FlightAware's historical data can confirm or contradict claims about when specific aircraft (and by inference, their owners or passengers) were in certain places. Aircraft present at a specific airport on a specific date provides corroborating or contradicting evidence for location claims.

Fleet analysis for specific operators shows all aircraft associated with an operator, revealing the scope of their aviation assets and enabling systematic travel analysis across all affiliated aircraft.

FlightAware's ADS-B tracking works globally through a network of ground receivers. Coverage varies by location — remote areas with fewer receivers have gaps in coverage.

Document aircraft tail numbers investigated, flight history records retrieved, and relevant travel patterns identified with query timestamps.
