InstaLooter

Another API-less Instagram pictures and videos downloader. (defunct)

Investigator Use

InstaLooter is an open-source Python tool available on GitHub that downloads Instagram photos, videos, and profile metadata without requiring an Instagram account or the official API. It enables bulk downloading of public Instagram content for offline archiving and investigation.

For OSINT investigators, Instagram is a rich source of photographic and video intelligence — but Instagram's platform prevents easy bulk downloading or systematic archiving of profile content. InstaLooter enables this systematic content collection from public profiles, saving posts locally for analysis outside the platform.

Evidence preservation is the most critical investigative application. Instagram content disappears when accounts are deleted, made private, or posts are removed. InstaLooter allows investigators to systematically download all posts from a target profile immediately upon discovery, before the account changes or posts are removed. Local copies can be hashed and archived for evidence chain of custody.

Bulk photo metadata extraction from downloaded files provides geolocation data (when photos haven't had EXIF stripped), timestamps, and device information that complements the visual content of posts.

For long-running investigations tracking a specific account over time, InstaLooter can be scheduled to regularly download new posts, maintaining a complete archive of account activity that includes posts that might later be deleted.

Timeline reconstruction from downloaded posts with their original Instagram timestamps allows investigators to build chronological profiles of subjects' activities, locations, and social connections based on the photographic evidence they voluntarily shared.

Limitations: InstaLooter only works with public profiles — private accounts require authentication, which InstaLooter does not facilitate. Instagram's API and platform changes periodically affect tool compatibility. Ensure the tool version you use is current and functional.

Operational security: Instagram may detect and flag bot-like downloading behavior, potentially flagging your account or IP. Use appropriate rate limiting and consider operating through Tor or a VPN.

Document all downloaded profiles with the profile URL, download timestamp, number of posts collected, and any relevant metadata findings.
