Investigator Use
PrintFriendly is a browser-based tool and browser extension that reformats web pages into clean, printable or PDF-exportable versions by stripping navigation menus, advertisements, sidebars, and other non-content elements. For OSINT investigators, researchers, and anyone who needs to preserve web content in a clean, document-ready format, PrintFriendly provides a fast way to create readable, archivable copies of web pages.
The tool's primary value in investigative contexts is creating clean PDF snapshots of web content for evidence preservation. When a web page contains relevant information for an investigation — a social media post, news article, forum thread, or company profile — converting it to PDF via PrintFriendly produces a document that preserves the content, layout, and visual presentation in a format suitable for inclusion in investigation reports or legal proceedings.
Unlike browser print-to-PDF, PrintFriendly first strips the page of clutter, producing a cleaner document that focuses on the actual content. This makes exported PDFs significantly more readable when submitted as exhibits. The tool also allows manual removal of specific page sections before export — investigators can remove irrelevant sidebar content while keeping the main article.
The browser extension integrates directly into Chrome, Firefox, and other browsers, allowing one-click PDF generation from any web page without visiting the PrintFriendly website separately. For investigators who routinely document web content, the extension streamlines the preservation workflow.
PrintFriendly also creates a shareable link to the reformatted version of any page, which can be useful for sharing clean versions of content with colleagues who need to review it quickly without navigating to the original cluttered page.
Limitations include JavaScript-rendered content: pages that load content dynamically may not fully render before PrintFriendly captures them, resulting in incomplete PDFs. For complex pages, browser-based print-to-PDF with a custom print stylesheet may produce more accurate results. PrintFriendly also does not capture metadata like URL, capture date, or page hashes — investigators should supplement it with URL documentation and timestamps.
For high-stakes evidence preservation, pair PrintFriendly with dedicated archiving tools like SingleFile, Hunchly, or the Wayback Machine for redundant documentation.
