Creative Commons Search (search.creativecommons.org) is a search tool that finds images, audio, video, and other content licensed under Creative Commons licensing terms, allowing investigators to locate legally reusable media across platforms including Flickr, Wikimedia Commons, YouTube, and others.

For OSINT investigators, Creative Commons Search has two distinct applications. First, for building investigation presentations and reports that need illustrative imagery without copyright concerns — finding legally reusable images of locations, people, objects, or concepts relevant to a case. Second, as an OSINT research tool itself — geotagged Creative Commons images may contain EXIF location data, subjects of photographs may appear in identifiable contexts, and Creative Commons content often comes with attribution that links creators to their works.

Geotagged Creative Commons images from platforms like Flickr retain EXIF data in some cases, making them useful for location investigation. Searching for images near a specific location and reviewing the full-resolution originals for embedded GPS data or identifiable details can supplement other geospatial intelligence.

Creator attribution on Creative Commons content links photographs to their creators' accounts. A user who has photographed a specific location, person, or event under Creative Commons license has publicly connected their identity to that content — providing an OSINT pivot to their full account history on the hosting platform.

For event investigation, searching Creative Commons image repositories for photographs of a specific event or location can surface documentary evidence from community photographers who were present and chose open licensing, making their imagery more discoverable than proprietary content.
