Investigator Use
Copyscape is a plagiarism detection and content tracking service that searches the web for copies or near-copies of a specific text passage or URL, identifying where content has been duplicated, republished, or plagiarized across the internet.
For OSINT investigators, Copyscape's duplicate content detection has several direct investigative applications. When investigating online fraud operations that use identical or near-identical content across multiple fake websites, Copyscape can find all domains where the same text appears — revealing the full network of fraudulent sites operated by the same actor from a single content sample.
Fake review networks, coordinated astroturfing campaigns, and review fraud frequently use templated or copied content across multiple accounts and platforms. When identical or near-identical review text is found in one location, Copyscape searches for all other instances of that text, surfacing the scale and distribution of the coordinated content operation.
Identity fraud investigations can use Copyscape to determine whether a fraudulent profile's "About" text, biography, or other identifying content has been copied from a legitimate source — establishing that the fraudulent profile plagiarized its content from a real person or organization.
For corporate investigations, tracking where proprietary content (product descriptions, marketing copy, technical documentation) has been scraped and republished reveals competitors engaging in unauthorized copying and helps map the network of sites that may be systematically targeting the organization.
Disinformation tracking uses Copyscape to follow specific narrative text as it propagates across websites — identifying the original source and all downstream republications that may be part of an information operation.
The free version allows comparison of a specific URL against indexed content. Premium versions allow text-based search and batch URL comparison.
Document the source text or URL used as input, all URLs where matching content was found, the degree of similarity, and the search date for investigation records.
